While insulation is practically a necessity for any modern structure, that doesn’t mean that all insulation methods are correctly utilized. We have a lifetime warranty for our services (including workmanship defects) and are Building Performance Institute (BPI) Certified. We always provide the right solution for our customers. If there’s one characteristic that contributes to our success year after year, it’s our talented staff. Comfort 1st insulation contractors in Milwaukee, WI, have experience with fiberglass batting, blown-in cellulose, polyurethane foam, and any other material we use. Attention to detail and quality matters, so we’ve trained our staff with a proven approach no matter how large or small the job is. We’re a family owned and operated business that believes each client deserves our best, and we know this starts with superior customer service.
We want your home’s insulative properties to last as long as you do, which is why we use top-performing insulation materials. Gone are the days of relying on less effective cellulose substances, like cardboard and corn cobs. Today’s cellulose is made primarily of recycled newspapers that have a flame retardant added to reduce the likelihood of a fire spreading further. We only use the highest quality materials, which are tested and proven to retain warmth in cold weather while maximizing your building’s existing heating system.
Is it cheaper? Sure, if you’re only talking about money. But, it will cost you a lot of time and headaches. For many people who say, “I’ll install insulation myself…” quickly being to feel like, “I bit off more than I could chew.”
There is not enough insulation installed to meet the building codes for their climate.
Too much insulation prevents the building from being able to breathe. Moisture can become trapped inside the excess insulation which leads to mold growth.
Insulation products are each specifically designed to accommodate various areas of a building. Applying a product in the incorrect area of a building would be a waste of time and money. Speak to a certified technician about the correct product and placement for your project.
The wrong approach to insulating a crook or corner or gap.
The right type of material but the wrong method of installation for your particular house.
The wrong pairing of multiple types of insulation
The list goes on.
We could list many mistakes that are both serious and easy to make. True, you wouldn’t be the first to make them, but that won’t make the consequences any less frustrating or costly for you.
As is always true in life, there is simply no substitute for experience. A professional will have already learned these lessons the hard way — a long time ago — to your benefit.
The best type of attic insulation for the hot Illinois summers, and cold winters, is spray foam. Closed-cell spray foam has an impressive R-value in the range of 6 to 7 per inch. Other adequate attic insulation types for Illinois include blown-in fiberglass, blown-in cellulose, and fiberglass batt.
It can costs between $1 and $5 per square foot for insulation on average, depending on the type. A 1,500-square-foot home could cost between $1,500 and $7,500 to insulate. The amount of insulation needed varies from home to home.
According to ENERGY STAR®, you can put new insulation over old insulation, “unless it is wet. If it is wet or appears that the insulation has previously been wet, you should look for the cause and repair the problem…” Wet insulation is problematic, as it can lead to mold, mildew and sometimes the rotting of ceilings or roof rafters.
Although insulation professionals will handle the installation for you, here are some things to keep in mind about removing old insulation and installing new insulation over old insulation.
“Faced” insulation should not be placed on top of existing insulation in the attic. Any new roll or batt insulation installed over existing insulation in the attic needs to be without a vapor retarder (face). The vapor retarder on top of or between layers of insulation can trap moisture. Any existing batt or roll insulation in the attic should have the facing against the attic drywall floor or no facing at all.
Batt or rolled insulation or blown loose-fill insulation (fiberglass or cellulose) can be installed on top of old insulation.
Insulation should be rolled out perpendicular to the joists—and unfaced rolls should be used.
K13 is a spray on insulation used for thermal and noise control which is applied to ceilings as an exposed finish. This spray is used to create a comfortable sound controlled environment in offices, bars, restaurants and event venues.
K13 thermal insulation spray is created from cellulose materials which are used to reduce noise levels and absorb sound. This versatile product can be applied on many surfaces and is useful in reducing noise in offices, music venues, restaurants or metal roofs.
Spraying fire resistant K13 insulation on the ceiling of a building increases safety. K13 thermal insulation is fire class 0 meaning that it decreases the heat release and prevents the spread of flames on surfaces.
This green form of insulation is composed of recyclable materials such as cotton and wood. Applying K13 offers many esthetic benefits and can compliment any color scheme as the spray is offered in a variety of different colors.
K13 spray can be applied 5 inches thick and has an R-Value of 3.75 per inch. This versatile spray can be applied to almost any surface shape such as domed, curved and corrugated. One of the many benefits of this spray is that it fills in gaps, cracks, creates an air seal, stops air leakage, condensation and moisture. Another amazing quality about K13 is that it adheres to metal, glass, gypsum, wood, concrete, and plasterboard.
Blown-in insulation is a loose-fill product that is installed with a blower machine. This type of insulation can be beneficial for small attics which do not have enough room for a technician to climb inside of and install batt insulation. Instead, blown-in insulation only needs a small access point and can be blown in with a machine.
Another amazing benefit of loose-fill insulation is that it can be installed in already existing walls, which is called retrofitting. A small hole is drilled into the wall one foot below the ceiling and another one yard above the floor. The insulation is then blown in, covering the entire inside area of the wall. Once finished, a plastic cap is put over the hole and the area is skim-coated and painted to match the wall.
Blown-in insulation is available in rockwool, fiberglass and cellulose. Each product has many different uses and benefits and one of our certified technicians can help you decide which product is best for you. This form of insulation can be installed quickly, providing immediate comfort and reducing energy payments.
Cellulose Insulation: Cellulose is our most environmentally friendly product since it’s made of up to 85% recycled material and takes significantly less energy to create than other insulation materials.
Rockwool is the recreation of a naturally occurring material found in Hawaii. The material was found next to volcanos after an eruption since the high winds would blow the molten rock, forming thin rock strings which were then discovered hanging on the nearby trees.
Rockwool insulation is produced liquifying rocks at high temperatures and spinning the liquid at a high speed to form thin fiber strings. This form of insulation boats an R-Value of 3.0-R to 3.3-R per inch.
Rockwool insulation has many important benefits like preventing fire, as the product is non-combustible and made out of rock. This product is extremely effective as a noise barrier, which muffles and absorbs sound waves. Rockwool can be installed as a blown-in loose-fill or in batts.
This form of insulation is sustainable, as it is composed of rocks which are a naturally occurring material. Also, rockwool insulation has an extremely long lifespan and lasts for the the lifetime of the building. Finally, the insulation is water repellant which prevents mold and mildew.
Spray Foam Insulation: Comfort 1st offers spray foam insulation installation in Roscoe. Spray foam (blown-in), or polyurethane, a wet insulation that expands into thick foam (like shaving cream) and best for crevices, cracks, and areas that are difficult to reach. It also can help reduce air infiltration. Spray foam can be used for attics, walls, roofs and ceiling insulation.
The Blown-In Blanket (BIBS) system method of insulation keeps loose-fill insulation firmly in place between wall studs with a mesh netting. The netting is nailed into the studs and small holes are made in the netting.
The insulation blower is inserted through the netting holes and blows the loose-fill behind the netting, perfectly insulating around ductwork, pipes, and electrical boxes without any air pockets.
One important benefit of blown-in blanket systems is that the insulation is firmly packed in place, without the ability to settle over time or form air gaps. This method of insulation is highly effective for sound dampening, preventing mold, pests, drafts, pollens, and moisture.
Blown-in blanket systems have an R-Value of about R-4.23 per inch. The materials are also mold resistant, non-combustible, and created from recycled materials.
Radiant Barrier Insulation: Radiant barrier is a reflective insulation material which is typically installed next to the underside of the roof. This helps reduce the cost of cooling via reflection.
Sonoglass thermal insulation spray is effectively applied in a thin single layer and provides an acoustic treatment for venues, churches, gymnasiums and theaters. It adheres almost all surface shapes such as curved, irregular, domed or flat.
While providing thermal insulation benefits, sonoglass most importantly reduces noise levels, creating a comfortable environment for noisy venues, performances, audiences and sports games.
One major benefit of sonoglass spray is the ability to apply it in a very thin layer which saves time and money, while still providing sound control and thermal protection. Also, the applied finish of the spray is polished, smooth and even, making sonoglass an esthetically appealing insulation spray.
This mold resistant spray boats an R-Value of R-3.733 per inch and is created from recycled materials. Sonoglass is rated flame-spread 0, non-combustible, available in various colors and adheres to almost all surface types.
Monoglass insulation spay is effective for application in difficult to reach areas and is created from a mixture of soft glass fibers and polymers. The spray can be applied 7 inches thick on vertical surfaces and 5 inches thick on horizontal surfaces.
An amazing benefit of monoglass spray is that it adheres to almost any surface such as glass, concrete, gypsum, wood, fireproofing, steel and more. Vertical spray applications have an R-Value of R-28 and overhead applications have an R-Value of R-20.
One important quality of monoglass insulation is that it is mold resistant and is an effective in insulation for indoor pools or areas with high humidity. The spray offers high R-Values while also reducing noise levels. Monoglass spray can be applied in one swipe and expands to the desired size without need for any additional layers. When being applied to fireproofing, the fire ratings do not change as monoglass is non-combustible.
Monoglass spray is non-combustible, non-toxic, flame spread 0 and smoke development 0. It boasts a Noise Reduction Coefficent of .95, meaning that 95% of sound waves are absorbed, while the last 5% are deflected. Created from partially recycled materials, monoglass can be considered a green form of insulation.
