Spray foam is a commonly used term for various chemically engineered insulation products. Some people are familiar with single cans of insulation products found in their local hardware store; this is called one-part spray foam, meaning it is a continuous mix that can be applied to specific, smaller areas of need. This form of BCX0 commercial or residential spray foam insulation is intended for “quick fix” use, not long-term or large-scale insulation requirements.
For larger commercial spray foam insulation jobs like covering an entire ceiling area, attic, crawl space, or wood-framed walls, professionals utilize a two-part foam that combines isocyanate catalysts with polyol resin at the application nozzle. When mixed during the spray process these two materials react to each other creating a specially engineered insulation product capable of expanding to 30-60 times that of its liquid state. Spray foam fills cracks and voids while adhering to irregular surfaces, making it especially effective in insulating homes.
Excellent at filling any and all gaps and cracks
Prevents air leaks and drafts.
Does not compress, shift around, fall out place, or lose R-value like fiberglass.
Waterproof and resistant to moisture which means no mold or mildew.
Spray foam insulation is available in a variety of types which vary in densities. The density of the product determines it’s expected Understanding R-Values.
Lower-density foams are referred to as Open Cell Spray Foam while the medium-density foams are a Closed Cell Spray Foam product. Both types of spray foam are thermoset cellular plastics composed of millions of cells working together to keep you more comfortable in your home.
Open Cell is a semi-rigid material and can generally be crumbled by hand; it has an R-value around 3.8 per inch. When installed at thicknesses of 5.5”+ Open Cell foam acts as an air barrier, but not as a vapor barrier. This is commonly used for interior walls because it is adept at absorbing air leakage and offers sound dampening benefits.
Closed Cell is rigid to the touch (3x-4x more dense than Open Cell). It has a Long Term R-value ranging between 6-7 per inch. This foam completely seals each air cell providing both an air and vapor barrier. This type of insulation is commonly utilized to seal exterior facing walls, providing your home with the best barrier from the environment outside.
