Federal Insulation Tax Credit — What You Need To Know

The federal Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit (Section 25C), which included insulation and air-sealing upgrades, will no longer be available for improvements placed in service after December 31, 2025. Although the credit was originally extended through 2032, recent federal legislation accelerated the expiration date.

If you had insulation installed by Comfort 1st Insulation between January 1, 2022 and December 31, 2025, you may still be eligible to claim the credit on your federal tax return for the year your project was completed.

Who Qualifies And What You Can Claim

Homeowners who installed qualifying insulation or air sealing in their primary residence during the eligible period can claim 30% of material costs, up to $1,200 per year. Labor costs are generally not eligible.

Home energy audits may qualify for a credit of up to $150, and certain new construction projects may qualify for builder credits depending on certification standards. Improvements completed after December 31, 2025 are not eligible for this federal credit.

How to Claim the Credit

To claim the credit, file IRS Form 5695 (Residential Energy Credits) with your federal tax return for the year the work was completed. The form and instructions are available directly from the IRS at https://www.irs.gov/forms-pubs/about-form-5695. Be sure to keep your receipts, installation invoices, and manufacturer certifications with your tax records in case documentation is requested.
